Welcome to the Norwich City School District Special Education Department
At NCSD, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive, supportive environment where every student can grow, learn, and thrive. Our Special Education Department provides individualized, evidence-based instruction tailored to meet the unique academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of each student.
We offer a variety of specialized classroom settings to ensure the right level of support:
6:1:1 Classrooms (K-5) – Six students, one teacher, and one teaching assistant. Designed for students requiring intensive support in a highly structured, therapeutic environment.
8:1:1 Classrooms (K-8) – Eight students, one teacher, and one teaching assistant. Ideal for students who benefit from small group instruction with consistent behavioral and academic support.
15:1 Classrooms (6-12) – Fifteen students and one teacher. Appropriate for students who can succeed in a less restrictive setting but still benefit from individualized instruction and support.
12:1:1 Life Skills Classrooms (6-12) – Focused on preparing students for greater independence through functional academics, daily living skills, communication, social development, and vocational readiness. This setting supports students who may be working toward an alternative pathway to graduation or independent adult living.
Co-Teach Classrooms – A general education and special education teacher work together in the same classroom to support both general and special education students. This inclusive model allows for differentiated instruction, greater flexibility, and individualized support within the least restrictive environment.
Grade level Pods - Each pod is staffed by a dedicated team that understands the developmental needs of students in that age group and collaborates to ensure smooth transitions as students advance through grade levels.
Our team—comprised of special education teachers, teaching assistants, related service providers (speech, OT, PT), counselors, and behavior specialists—works closely with families to develop and implement effective Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans that promote growth and success across all domains.
At Norwich CSD, we are proud to champion diversity in learning and to provide a space where every student is seen, heard, and supported. We encourage you to explore our programs and reach out to learn more about how we can support your child’s educational journey.
