Letter about Give Back Days

March 21, 2024

Dear NCSD Families and Staff:

Thank you to all of our families for your trust and patience as we seek compliance with regulation that dictates an instructional day count totaling 180. As we enter spring, the threat of having to cancel school due to inclement weather lessens. As many of you know, we build our school calendar with six emergency days to ensure we achieve the 180 state mandated days of instruction.

Emergency days are essentially insurance for inclement weather, boiler malfunctions, water main breaks, school tragedy etc. At the conclusion of the winter season, we typically find ourselves with unused emergency days that need to be built back into the calendar in order to avoid exceeding the 180-day requirement. Consequently, we will be implementing the following changes as “Give Back days” to the school calendar for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year.

·      Monday, April 8th- no school for 10&12-month staff and students (1st unused emergency day)

·     Friday, May 24- no school for 10-month staff and students (2nd unused emergency day)

·      Tuesday, May 28th- no school for 10-month staff and students (3rd unused emergency day)

·      Monday, June 17th - no School for 10-month staff and students (4th unused emergency day)

In the event that we need to use another emergency day(s) between now and the end of the year, the above days will become regular instructional days, starting with May 28th, then May 24th and lastly June 17th.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out.

Respectfully,

Scott Ryan

Superintendent of Schools
