On March 13, Dr. Bowers took part in a conference call with the Superintendents of the DCMO BOCES region along with the Department of Health from 3 counties, including Chenango County. After discussing all the factors that schools should consider regarding COVID-19, decisions were made that are in the best interest of our students and their families. It was decided that this coming Monday, March 16th, the Norwich City School District will schedule a conference day, without students, for teachers to plan and organize for a closure. At this point, the NCSD will remain open for the remainder of the week, Tuesday through Friday if circumstances allow, but will then be closed after school on Friday, March 20th through Monday, April 13th.
The District plans to reopen Tuesday April 14th, after the spring break, if the situation is contained. It is possible that the plans to close on Friday may change and the district will close earlier, if it’s necessary by edict or if we have a confirmed case of Coronavirus.
During our closure, we expect that our teachers and students will be engaged in learning activities and lessons by using our learning platform Schoology. Please read the letter that was emailed yesterday and is on our website for additional information. Additionally, we have information within the letter on how to borrow a device from the district if one is needed in your home.
We also plan to send information to the Norwich Community about the continuation of our food program. We will provide breakfast and lunch for students throughout the closure for families that would like to take advantage of the offer. Information will be forthcoming on the times the meals will be delivered.
We appreciate your understanding of our decision. We have been faced with a very difficult situation and are making a choice based on the health and safety needs of the Norwich Community. More information will follow.
