Congratulations to the Norwich indoor track and field team, which sent five boys to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships on Saturday, March 2, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
Senior Gabriel Gawronski earned a top-10 finish in the 600-meter run to lead the Purple Tornado, placing ninth in 1 minute, 22.32 seconds.
Gabe also anchored Norwich’s 800 relay team, following junior David Berger, senior Eric Conant and junior Nik Barber to place 17th in 1:33.98.Additionally, Norwich received a 16th from Zach Lowe in the shot put (45 feet, 6.75 inches) and a 29th from Eric in the 55-meter dash (6.81 seconds).
The five qualified for states during the Section 4 Championships on February 23 at Cornell University’s Barton Hall, where Gabe, Eric and Zach won Section 4 titles in their respective events. Gabe took first in the 600 in 1:23.48, Eric won the 55 in 6.72, and Zach had a personal-best shot put performance of 48-8.
Gabe and Eric also teamed with David and Nik for a winning time of 1:35.69 in the 800 relay during the Section 4 State Qualifier.
Senior Riley Marsh paced Norwich’s girls at the Section 4 Championships with a personal-best time of 7.67 in the 55 (fourth place).
