PB Teacher Lands $5,000 Grant

Julie Salerno plus the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation equals $5,000 for Perry Browne students.

Principal Michelle Osterhoudt announced Friday, January 18, that Norwich’s intermediate school (grades 3-5) will receive a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant thanks to Math teacher Salerno, who applied for the foundation’s support of her STEM to Success project earlier this academic year.

The grant will help Perry Browne implement and maintain the comprehensive Math & Movement program, which focuses on movement-based learning to improve student achievement and physical fitness.

Aligned with New York state’s Next Generation Learning Standards, Math & Movement features mats and banners with patterns of bright colors and large numbers/letters. Students follow the patterns by moving in various ways (hop, walk, crawl, dance, etc.), building physical, mental and social skills in the process.

“The Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program delivers on Lowe’s commitment to improve the educational environment for students across the country,” said foundation chairwoman Maureen Ausura. “We're honored to work with Perry Browne to support the needs of our local students, teachers and families.”

Perry Browne will be one of 545 American schools to receive a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for the Fall 2018 cycle. Since its inception in 2006, Lowe’s Toolbox for Education has provided nearly $45 million in grants to more than 10,000 schools. Grants are available to K-12 public schools in the United States. Parent groups and educators can apply for grants online at ToolboxForEducation.com.

Great job Julie and thank you Lowe's!
