Superintendent's Message

Good things come to those at Norwich!

Happy New Year to the Norwich Community and congratulations to the many students for an excellent first half of the school year. This is an exciting time of year as class schedules, college planning, extracurricular activities and sporting events are all underway. Every day there is an activity for all students to participate in and almost always an opportunity for a parent or community member to see our students at work.

Senior Kayla Farrell excelled at the NYSSMA conference and dozens of students across the District were accepted into All-County music groups and ensembles. Preparations for the high school musical “Footloose” have started as well. Performances are scheduled for April 5 and 6.

Over the holiday season, there were multiple examples of students and staff working on benefits and activities to support the community. Norwich Middle School held a food drive led by Mr. Manchester and a coat drive. Additionally, middle school students Jacob Phillips and Grayson Boyer were recognized by the Norwich YMCA for their volunteering efforts. Norwich High School got into the spirit, too, with a blood drive, a clothing drive, the holiday backpack and food basket programs, and volunteering at community events.

On the athletic front, our indoor track and field program continues to excel with both the boys and girls teams establishing school records in the 800-meter relays. A big postseason honor went to track standout Eric Conant in football, too, as he earned an honorable mention on the Class B All-State Team. Our wrestling, basketball and cheerleading squads are also doing great things this year. You can read more about their accomplishments and many others inside our Winter 2019 newsletter.

Our building project has wrapped up with buzz-in security doors in all buildings, kitchen renovations and new entrances all complete. Our Technology Plan is now entering its second phase as we are evaluating the initial implementation of our one-to-one initiative, which put hundreds of Chromebooks and iPads into the hands of our students. Next year, we are still planning to move forward with getting every student involved in our one-to-one program.

Teachers are building their technology skills and we are seeing more engaging and collaborative student activities. Across the District, from Gibson to the high school, students and staff are working smarter and taking advantage of the opportunities before them.

Looking ahead, our school budget planning process continues and the Board of Education is carefully reviewing the District’s current spending and planning for next year. We are looking forward to a productive budget season that continues to bring resources and opportunities to the District. We are fortunate to have an excellent school district that has always offered options and opportunities to our students.
