Perry Browne Biography

Perry Browne Biography

Perry Browne is the name of our school. It is also the name of a man who lived and worked in Norwich. Perry Browne’s full name was Frank Pearsall Browne. His nickname was Perry.

Mr. Browne was born on June 20, 1901, in Elmira, New York. He was the son of Frank and Adelaide Browne. He lived in Elmira until he was 8 years old, then moved to Norwich with his family.

His father was the manager of the local YMCA. It is here that young Perry stated his love of activity and sports. In school, he served as a team manager of the athletic teams and he was president of the High School Athletic Association. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Quill and Scroll Journalistic Fraternity.

After Perry graduated from school, he went to work for the newspaper called the Norwich Sun in 1921. He was a sports editor, an advertising manager, a city editor and manager of the newspaper. He also wrote many stories for The Binghamton Press, The Utica Press, The New York Times and The Syracuse Herald Journal.

In his spare time, Perry served as Director of the Norwich YMCA, The Norwich Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Norwich Chamber of Commerce. He was once honored with a life membership in the New York Parent Teacher Association.

He married Grace Kingman while living in Norwich and had a son named William K. Browne. William also worked for the Norwich Sun. Perry and his wife, who went by the nickname of "Sis," lived with William at 45 Hayes Street in the 1940s.

Perry Browne died of a heart attack March 1, 1951, while attending a Norwich High School event. A few years later, two new schools were built in Norwich to replace the smaller Ward Schools. A suggestion was made to name one of the schools after Perry Browne, the highly respected news reporter.

Perry Browne Alma Mater
Oh Perry Browne we sing to thee,
Our banner raised on high.

With purple and white our colors bright,
May thy beauty never die.

‘Tis here we study day by day,
And strive to learn and grow,

That we might be the boys and girls,
Whom all would like to know.

Oh, Perry Browne, oh, Perry Browne,
Our school so fair and true.

Oh, Perry Browne, oh, Perry Browne,
We sing our song to you.
