About our Community

The Norwich City School District is located in Chenango County approximately forty miles north of Binghamton and forty-five miles south of Utica. The City School District was created in 1954 through consolidation of twenty-one common school districts with that of the City of Norwich. We are one of seven City-Central school districts in New York State. With an estimated 1995 population of 12,000, the greater Norwich area is the seat of Chenango County and serves as the commercial and cultural focus of the largely rural area. The Norwich area is largely rural in character, but the City of Norwich is largely commercial and industrial. The City is the home of such manufacturers as Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (pharmaceuticals); Unison Industries (jet engine ignition systems and electronic products); QUEST International-Sheffield Products, Inc. (dairy by-products); and Norwich Aero Products Inc. (electronics). The city is the business center of Chenango County, which ranks tenth in the number of dairy farms in the State.

The community is served by a modern and fully accredited 123-bed hospital. The county seat is located in Norwich where a modern county office building, county court house and other county facilities are located.

Norwich is within driving distance to such SUNY colleges as SUNY Morrisville, SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Cortland, as well as having an extension of SUNY Morrisville located in Norwich. Colleges and Universities within driving distance include Colgate University, Syracuse University, Hartwick College and Hamilton College.

There are six public parks within the city, one equipped with an outdoor swimming pool and another houses an outdoor skating rink.

The community's cultural diversity includes an active Chamber of Commerce. Please visit this site and the City of Norwich site for more information.

The city is host to several weekend cultural and family fun events throughout the year. Such activities as Balloon Fest, Pumpkin Fest, Colorscape Chenango, Jazz Festival, County Fair and the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament draw thousands of participants to the city center yearly. Norwich is also home to the Chenango County Historical Society and the Northeast Classic Car Museum.
